Pancake Supper: Bro. Mike Brooks will be looking after getting the donations for the food. Bro. Joe Doyle will be looking after the preparation. Bro. Joe is asking that members be at the church by noon. Any possible help is welcome. Tickets, which are a dollar piece, will be available after all masses.

Ushering: The parish would like to see ushering become more like a ministry. There are many parishioners who don’t know how to become an usher. It is felt that if there are schedules and contact lists then there will be ushers at all masses. Father Paul thanks everyone who has helped out so far. He asks if members who have been ushering for a while would be willing to put on a training session.

Garage Sale: Posted in the bulletin incorrectly. Reminder to parishioners to bring in items will be posted on the 3rd Sunday, to be brought in on the 4th. The KofC will be picking the items up from the church.

Basketball Free Throw: As mentioned at the previous meeting, it was decided to hold the competition at the schools. We had a total of 42 students participate, with 8 going to the District Competition on the 4th of February in Bolton. From there, there will be one student from Orangeville representing the district at the regional level on February 25th in Mississauga.

The Corporate meeting will be held at 7:30 on March 8th.

There will be 3 brothers attending the state convention on February 26th in Toronto.

Food For Thought

TAX TIME AGAIN
by Michael Webster - Fraternal Advisor

This month, I chose to pass up the opportunity to use the age old cliché about two things we must do... although the timing should certainly bring it to mind. This season, in most homes, is financial accounting time. I’d like to wager that, at some point in the process, someone will ask (probably you!) “Where did all our money go?”

Surely, all of the money we earn finds a home somewhere... the grocer, the mortgage, the tax man. Very little, if any, is left for a personal bank account or other investments. Most of us consider ourselves fortunate if we’ve managed to pay our bills! Folks usually save what’s leftover... and for most folks that’s nothing.

The point is, whatever the amount earned, chances are good that it is spent providing for and rearing a family. Think about that for a minute. The needs of that family continue - food, shelter and clothing - even if the breadwinner suffers an untimely death.

So what does income tax have to do with insurance? Simply this... it can serve as a reminder that protection for dependents should include an estimate of the current needs for money. While it may be convenient to say “I can’t afford it,” that’s probably not accurate when you consider that your family will be without any income should you die.

With this in mind, your Order has designed a plan which guarantees to continue income to your family for as long as they will need it. What’s more, this plan will enable you to systematically save some of those dollars so difficult to account for at tax time.

Call me today for an appointment. I want to hear from you. Michael Webster, Fraternal Advisor may be reached by phone at (705) 737-0646 or by email at michael.r.webster@sympatico.ca.

Just For A Chuckle

Black and White

A little girl attending a wedding for the first time, whispered to her mother, "Why is the bride dressed in white?"

"Because white is the color of happiness, and today is the happiest day of her life."

The child thought about this for a moment, then said, "So why is the groom wearing black?"

The Editor’s Desk

Brother Knights,

As I was sitting, listening to a very enlightening homily at mass this past weekend, I was moved by the theme of the sermon. Compassion was the subject.

In our very busy schedules, with life moving so fast, we sometimes lose compassion for our brothers and sisters who share this God given planet with us. In our daily lives, we contend with reports, deadlines, budgets; probably the most irritating event of our day, is dealing with increasing traffic just to get to our destinations. In all of this, we are sometimes blinded and don’t even see the people who are dealing with the very same challenges we are faced with.

The greatest commandment Our Lord gave us is simply this, “love one another, as I have loved you.” Quite simple, yet, in a stressed environment, it is certainly not always easy. Our Saviour has shown us, through His life on earth, the way to Eternal Life is through Him and in Him. He has shown us that the way to the Kingdom of God, is through compassion and love. He loved us so much, He died for us.

As we watch and listen to our elected officials who move closer to the legalization of assisted suicide and euthanasia, let us be compassionate for the unborn, the sick and the elderly. Life is a gift, given by our God, not to be dealt with lightly or to be discarded in a simple procedure. Write to our MP, let’s not let this happen; for if it does, life itself loses preciousness, and the gift would be viewed as nothing more than an expendable commodity.

Fraternally,
Brother Mike

Chaplain’s Summation
A good teaching time for children is in lent. By showing them how to be thankful and ask for blessings before meals and before going to bed. God is love and he loves them very much. Make sure to bring God’s great love to each child that you encounter. Remind them that they will never be alone and don’t have to be scared as long as we are there to protect them.
With everything that is going on in Toronto, many people are coming from No Fixed Address. These are people who were never shown proper love.
In one of the house I was visiting, a little toddler broke an ashtray. The mother stood over him a told him that he is bad. This is a poor start in showing children that they are loved.

Membership Committee
We are looking for a 2nd Degree initiation ceremony in our district.
When one is found, we will let the membership know.

Padre's Pad

Did you know that Ignatious of Loyola, Francis of Assisi, and Martin of Tours were all warriors? When we go back and look at them in history, we see that they were all men of their times, who thought that the best way to bring peace into their world, was through military violence. What is rather interesting, however, is the fact that they became disillusioned with this means of bringing peace to their lands.

All of them left their respective armies and listened to the voice of the Lord, whispering beneath the din of war; “Come follow Me.” All three of these men responded to the call of Our Lord, whom in the psalms asks “Whom shall I send?” The answer to that question was first shown to us through the life and actions of Jesus Christ, and again the psalm gives us the response “ Here I am Lord, send Me, I have come to do Your Will”.

We do not have to be converted soldiers, to hear the Lord call in our own age. Surely, we remember the great things our council has done in the past, and continues to do, even up to this time in our history.

Remember the work of Gene Dopp Sr., his great work with the group. Remember the house the Knights built for some poor families. Remember the great job Jim Walsh did on the pictorial history of our order. Is that spirit still alive in our order? I believe so, and if we simply look around, we can see many of our brother Knights giving their response to the question of the Lord; “Whom shall I send?” If we listen with our hearts, we will hear the voice of the works done by the Knights; “Here we are Lord, send us, we have come to do Your Will.”

Lent comes early this year, prepare yourselves for the Graces of the Season. Blessings and prayers for all of our families.

In Christ, Padre.

Grand Knight's Message

After reading “Parish Priest”, the biography of our order’s founder, I am left with a better understanding of the need for our order to exist. Father McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus in response to dire social and economic pressures faced by his parishioners upon the death of the head of the family. He saw first hand how devastating the loss of the breadwinner could be without a safety net of any kind. The Knights would provide that safety net but would also be the vehicle that Father McGivney would use to unlock the compassion implanted in each one of us by our Maker.

The need for someone to organize and put into practice Christian social teaching through the laity was there in New Haven in 1882 when Father McGivney answered the call by founding our order. Brothers, the need is here today more than ever. The question for each of us is how will we respond to that need. We can simply be a member of the Knights, pay our yearly dues and have our name on the membership list, or we can get involved in one of our projects. It may seem inconsequential to work a bingo or clean up a section of Highway 10, but this could be only the first step which leads you to further involvement, further doing your part to build God’s kingdom.

Just as Samuel ( 1 Samuel 3: 3-10 ) needed help to recognize God’s call, we can use our council to help us answer the call in our own way. It could be the start of a deeper relationship with our Lord with limitless potential. The degree to which we open our hearts to hear and respond to God’s call need not be limited to the good works done through our council. Although a great place to start, you may feel the call to contribute to a parish or community based organization where they too need your time and talent.

The longest journey begins with one step. Your first step could be simply coming out to a council meeting if you haven’t been for a while. God continually invites us to help do His work in our community and world. His call may be imperceptible as we rush through our day. Through our council we can help each other hear and answer that call. The way in which Father McGivney fully responded to his call is his legacy for us today.

“Parish Priest” is available at our church library and a copy at our council.

Vivat Jesus

Spiritual Meditation

Thy name is as ointment poured forth.

Christ ... hath loved us, and hath given himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savour. Unto you therefore which believe he is precious. God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow. In him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

If ye love me, keep my commandments. The love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. The house was filled with the odour of the ointment. They took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.

O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens. Emmanuel ... God with us. His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.

Song of Solomon 1:3. Eph. 5:2. 1 Pet. 2:7. Phil. 2:9. Col. 2.9. John 14:15. Rom. 5:5. John 12:3. Acts 4:13. Ps. 8:1. Matt. 1:23. Isa. 9:6. Prov. 18:10.

Prayer for Faith

Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for giving me the Bible so I can understand Your ways. I also appreciate You giving me the understanding of the verses I read and study. Help me to live my life in accordance with Your Word. Please warn me Lord, when I am straying so that I can stay right on course with You. Help me to be disciplined to read and study the Bible daily. I need this discipline in my prayer life too. Please guide me as I read and guide my prayers so that I might pray the things that are on Your heart. I ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen

Good of the Order

Prayer was offered by the WGK Mike Sangregorio for the needs of friends and families of our council, especially all of the names that were mentioned, as well as Bro. Richard Marleau’s father.

Brothers, let us pray for all of our members and families, who may be experiencing illness, hardships of life and turmoil.

We ask this through our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Amen.
